1975 World Series of Poker

1975 World Series of Poker

A summary of 1975 world series of poker.

1970 was a decade notorious for a lot social changes in the society.  But not only did it host a series of controversial events such as the oil crisis, gay-rights empowerment, and the launch of Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts as links between US and USSR, it also witnessed the growth of World Series of Poker (WSOP) events from an annual challenge into a more publicized tradition in the prestigious poker circuit.  In 1975, when Paul McCartney was even fined for growing Marijuana and the first woman was able to climb the Mount Everest, the much-anticipated WSOP event had its final conclusion at Binion's Horseshoe Casino.  For six consecutive years,  this prominent league of poker challenges was held at this Downtown casino at Freemont Street, owned by Benny Binion, who first thought of this brand-new scheme or pattern for playing in WSOP.  What actually started as an invitational event in 1969 became a legacy to some of the best professional poker gamblers in the world.  From Crandell Addington, who was declared as the first WSOP grand prize winner and record holder of eight bracelets, other famous WSOP personalities also finished in cash as they earned their own promising titles.  In 1975, however, it was Brian "Sailor" Roberts who had the luckiest of all hands in the WSOP Main Event.

At the freeze-out event, where winner takes all and losers end up with absolutely nothing, Brian Roberts went against Bob Hooks, who's also famous for his money-management scheme.  But obviously, despite the undeniable skill and moneymaking mantra, this Texan player was, at that time, in no match for the destined $210,000 win of American professional player, Brian "Sailor" Roberts.  This 1975 WSOP grand prize winner actually got his nickname upon working for the Navy at the outbreak of the Korean War.  From his military roots, he then traveled around the country, competing with other poker legends like Amarillo Slim Preston and Doyle Brunson , who were already formidable figures in different poker games.  The "Sailor" first got his WSOP bracelet in 1974 for the $5,000 Deuce to Seven Draw challenge, until his previous success was confirmed with yet another in the final table of 1975 World Series of Poker Main Event.

More entrants were actually seen in the 1975 league than the previous years.  With a total of 21 challengers for the main event, $10,000 was collected from each player for a larger money pot amounting to $210,000.  However, not only in the main event, but in a series of different preliminary challenges, did the 6th Annual WSOP became a real exciting venue for poker plays.

For the Limit 7 Card Stud event, 44 entrants contributed to a pool of $44,000, while Johnny Moss took home its grand prize. Meanwhile, Sam Angel paid for the $1,000 buy-in, before he earned a total of $17,000 for the Limit Razz challenge.  As for Billy Baxter, he went home with a prize pool of $35,000 for No Limit Deuce to Seven Lowball event.  With $1,000 worth of buy-in, Jay Heimowitz completed the list of 1975 WSOP winners with $32,000 No Limit Hold'em money finish.  The 1975 Word Series of Poker was a 10-day poker challenge that started from May 6 and ended in May 15.
