1977 World Series of Poker |
1977 World Series of PokerA summary of 1977 world series of poker. If '13' is deemed to be a very unlucky number, '8' holds a more promising value in ancient Chinese tradition. But not only did '8' mark the annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) event in 1977, it also witnessed the historical back-to-back poker victory of Doyle Brunson, making him a real legend of his time. Apart from being the first to earn a million dollar mark in poker tournaments, he also had 10 WSOP bracelets, sharing the historical limelight with Phil Helmuth and Johnny Chan. However, what earned him great respect from his fans and colleagues is his winning the WSOP Main Event title in two consecutive years. In the 8th annual poker tournament, the "Texas Dolly" scored another 'first' in the record of WSOP.
In the 1977's series of tournaments, more players were seen playing for the main event. Although the buy-in fee was maintained at $10,000, the same with the previous years', the number of entrants had increased to more than half, while preliminaries were able to expand into more events with buy-ins that range from as little as $100 to as huge as $5,000.
Although it was in 1977 that "Star Wars" broke the box office records and Elvis died at age 42, for poker fans, a new hero and poker celebrity emerged in the personality of Doyle Brunson. The "Texas Dolly" was the second player to accomplish an overwhelming feat with a grand slam victory, while at the same time, he is also one of the four men to make it this far in the poker history. With almost three dozen gamblers on table, three men wittingly outplayed all the others. Doyle Brunson, Gary Berland, and Milo "Slew" Jacobson shared the intense moments of defeat and victory at the 1977 final table. The two didn't finish in money, but only as runners-up to Doyle Brunson, who won $340,000 as total cash prize. Apart from this, he also won in the preliminary tournament of Limit 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo, taking home as much as $62,500 from the prize pool. Indeed, it was a stunning figure for a $1,000 buy-in event. But to win it all, this American pro had to outplay all 64 entrants on the table.
Binion's Horseshoe Casino served as the venue for this event that run from April 28 to March 10. On the opening event of 1977 WSOP, Billy Allen won for the Limit Ace to Five Draw tourney. From a $500 buy-in, he was lucky enough to earn $10,800. But not only did Doyle Brunson proved to have a lucky hand on this event, when Bobby Baldwin was also able to strike a two-in-a-row wins for the No Limit Deuce to Seven Lowball and Limit 7 Card Stud events. On his first winning streak, he had $80,000 for the $10,000 buy-in poker match; on the following event, Baldwin earned $44,000 out of the $5,000 tournament fee or $124,000 in total cash prize.
The 1977 WSOP league of preliminary event winners also included Gary Berland for the Limit Razz poker challenge, Perry Green for the Limit Ace to Five Draw, and Jeff Sandow for the Limit 7 Card Stud -- all with $500 buy-ins. George Thomas Huber, on the other hand, won in the No Limit Hold'em event with Louis Hunsaker also on the first place in the No Limit Hold'em, Jackie McDaniels in the Ladies - Limit 7 Card Stud, Fats Morgan in the Limit 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo, and finally, Richard Schwartz in the Limit Razz event on Day 12.
