1985 World Series Of Poker

1985 World Series Of Poker

A summary of 1985 world series of poker.

Without much of a doubt, 1985 was year of politics and controversy in the United States.  The political scene at that time was something that many people did not particularly enjoy.  Fortunately, 1985 was a good year for the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) tournament.  Like the other WSOP contests, the one from 1985 is also as fast-paced and as exciting as its predecessors.  The pot money was raised to $1,400,000, and it was just one of the many reasons why more poker players joined.  The list includes popular and more seasoned poker players, most of which had also joined the past WSOP tournaments.  Poker is a game that is open to all kinds of player, so it is not surprising to see male and female players of different ages and nationality come together to show off their skills in playing the said card game.

The tournament started with one hundred and forty players during the first day in May 16.  There were different game variations as the players were spread out in different tables.  From Ace to Five Draw to the Seven-Card Stud, the games were all exciting and fun.  However, by May 17, only twenty-four players were able to continue.  Considered to be one of the toughest matches in the WSOP history, these qualified players included only three former WSOP champions, while the rest were still those trying to find their way.  The result was surprising, as it became obvious that more good poker players begin to emerge and are now willing to play seriously alongside the veterans.

The next tournament day, the numbers were again slashed down dramatically, as only nine players -- including one former WSOP champion -- were able to finish well enough for the final table in May 19.

During the final table at the 1985 World Series Of Poker tournament, only two players remained: T.J. Cloutier and Bill Smith.  Both players, though skilled, were obviously still favored by lady luck as they narrowly missed losing to each other during the last few moments of the match.  For a while, T.J. Cloutier looked confident enough to win the match, as his opponent Bill Smith looked drunk enough to lose.  It can be noted that Smith is popular for his drinking behavior, even going as far as bringing liquors to the poker table.  However, Smith proved capable of holding his drink while playing, as he bagged the Poker Champion title and the cash prize, after he beating Cloutier.  Once again, the WSOP final table proved to be elusive as Bill Smith was inducted in the long list of WSOP champions.

The success of the WSOP tournament only proves that poker playing is becoming more and more popular.  While there are new players who are out to show what they are made of, the more seasoned and experienced poker players -- especially those who have won WSOP bracelets -- are unwilling to give up their seats as regular players of the WSOP games.  The 1985 World Series Of Poker tournament is definitely one of the best years of the WSOP.
