1989 World Series Of Poker

1989 World Series Of Poker

A summary of 1989 world series of poker.

The year 1989 marks the historical pages since it is the year when astonishing events contributed to the shift in the political, social, and economic structure of the world. Who can forget the thousands of Chinese students protesting at the Tiananmen Square when martial law was implemented in Beijing? A few months after, on the other end of the world, Operation Just Cause was created to overthrow the Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega. This was also the year when Berlin Wall fell, ending the division between East and West Germany. An astronomical breakthrough was also celebrated in 1989 when Voyager II passed by Neptune. These important historical episodes of 1989 brought new phases in the lives of people.

Meanwhile, in the gaming arena, the year 1989 was the moment when certain poker players were able to shock the world with their winning moments. For a serious poker player, what could be more glorious than winning the 1989 World Series of Poker (WSOP)? The 1989 grand WSOP event was hosted by the legendary casino hotel Binion's Horseshoe. The venue itself speaks of a world-class casino, therefore it was no surprise that a particular WSOP night turned into a winning moment.

The name Phil Hellmuth, Jr. became famous right after the 1989 WSOP tournaments ended. The grand win of Phil Hellmuth, Jr. was placed in the World Series of Poker history as an impressive turn of events, or shall we say, the turn of cards. Just when everybody was speculating that the aggressive Johnny Chan would sweep the poker tables with his winning attitude, a young poker player, Phil, was able to grab the $755,000 winnings and the WSOP gold bracelet. Next in line was Johnny Chan who went home with $302,000. Ranking third in the final table was Don Zewin, with a total winning of $151,000. Followed in fourth place by Steve Lott who won $83,050. In the fifth rank was Lyle Berman who took home a winning of $67,950.

The night was a stirring and exciting event as Johnny Chan skillfully played with his usual aggressive charisma. Not too many poker spectators expected that a young and somewhat new in the poker industry like Phil Hellmuth, Jr. would beat Johnny Chan. The famous Benny Binion, owner of the Binion's Horseshoe casino, even said some profane words in total amazement of what happened during that WSOP tournament. Though Binion was not able to live through 1989, the Binion's Horseshoe (now Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel) continues to be an active participant in the gaming industry.

With the variety of world affairs that happened in 1989, the world saw the different developments and challenges that year. There were events that started some revolutionary transformations in the history, as well as events that still affect the world today. However, in the poker arena of luck and skills, the name Phil Hellmuth, Jr. will always be associated with the 1989 World Series of Poker event. That WSOP night belongs to the top winner who took home the WSOP bracelet and a huge amount of winnings.
