1999 World Series of PokerA summary of 1999 world series of poker.
The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is the most anticipated event of any poker enthusiast. Both poker superstars and novices gather every year to compete with one another and to determine who deserves to be called as the World Champion. Since 1970, qualified poker junkies have been battling to bring home the cash prize and the gold bracelet from the highly-acclaimed tournament first organized by poker ace Benny Binion.
The 1999 WSOP
Apart from the year 2000 break, people from various parts of the globe waited for the 30th Annual WSOP, which took place at Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas. Three hundred ninety-three entrants joined the tournament making the prize pool to reach up to $3,930,000. Every player strutted their skills and strategies to grab the $1-million cash prize and the 14-karat gold bracelet. However, only one man played the game well and rose to the top -- J. J. "Noel" Furlong.
Furlong modestly said in his interviews that his victory was out of 99% luck. But if you are a real poker fiend, you won't buy such statement, because poker is certainly a game of the dangerous minds. Furlong reached the main event's final table with his chips amounting to $1,544,000 together with Huck Seed, Padraig Parkinson, Erik Seidel, Alan Goehring, and Chris Bigler.
Huck Seed was the first poker pro who was eliminated from the match. The former WSOP champion moved in for over $500,000 with J8 of diamonds in hand. He was out of the game when Furlong made a call with a hand of A3 of hearts and flopped two pair. Seed came home with a winning amounting to $167,700.
The next player who was disposed from the final tournament was Bigler when he had pocketed nines and did not bet, and the Q-9-8 flop came. Analysts believed that Bigler thought he tricked Furlong when Bigler asked for all in for $400,000. Unfortunately for Bigler, Furlong had a hand of J-10 and flopped a straight making Bigler leave the table with $212,420.
Meanwhile, Seidel, rose from his seat when he had A-Q and moved in for $300,000, while Parkinson, with a hand of A-K, called. When a Queen appeared on the board, Seidel flopped, but he was automatically eliminated when a King was drawn. He walked away with $279,500, and he was then followed by Parkinson, whom Furlong eliminated, with the $489,125 cash prize.
Finally, there were only two poker aces left on the poker table. Furlong and Goehring were almost dead even that time. The 1999 WSOP main event ended when Furlong had pocketed fives and Goehring had pocketed sixes. When two Queens appeared on the board, followed by a five, Furlong was proclaimed World Champion instantly when he created a full house. Furlong bagged the $1 million cash prize and the WSOP bracelet, while Goehring received his $768,625 winning.
The 30th WSOP Champ
J. J. "Noel" Furlong, the 1999 WSOP Champion plays poker for fun. Unlike some poker pros, Furlong is already a millionaire before winning the top reward in the tournament, because he's been making big bucks from his carpet fabricating business. He started playing poker more than 20 years ago, and he finished 6th in the 1989 WSOP's main event. At the end of 2006, it was recorded that the total winnings of Furlong from the live tournaments was more than $1,100,000.
