Biography

The annual poker tournament World Series of Poker (WSOP) was started by poker legend Benny Binion in the early 1970s. Since then, professional poker players meet every year to compete against each other and to win the grand prize. As the year went, players who participate in this event have become more skilled, thus leading to more exciting games and stiffer competitions.

A rookie poker player can't expect to do well in a professional poker tournament like the World Series of Poker (WSOP). But there is one player who was able to achieve remarkable success even as a newcomer -- Erik "Lilar" Friberg.

This guy has proven for two consecutive years that his being a neophyte in the popular poker event cannot hinder him from playing well in WSOP tournaments.

Moreover, he was able to stand out even though he does not have an extensive background and experience in world poker challenges.

Fresh beginning

"Lilar" Friberg, who hails from Stockholm in Sweden, is one of the few Swedish poker stars who have penetrated the WSOP scene.

Before he started his professional career in the world of poker, Friberg was in college.  But his love for poker has led him to this very exciting world and to the financial gains that have started coming his way. In fact, Friberg considers playing poker as his source of income.

Today, he is definitely making a name for himself just like other players who came before him like James Van Alstyne and actor and poker fan Chevy Chase.

Young achievements

Friberg, only 23, had a little bit of an idea about the game before he started playing professional poker.  He is actually an expert in online poker playing. He has been playing the card game via the Internet for quite a long time.

However, it was only last year, at the 2006 WSOP main event, that Friberg gained success outside his forte, the online poker games.

Friberg landed on the eighth spot in the 2006 WSOP main event, and this can be considered as his first major international award.  He received a total winning of almost two million dollars. This particular victory also established him as one of the  many professional poker players to reckon with.

His victory in the 2006 WSOP event has inspired him to do well in this year's tournament. In fact, he finished third place in the six-handed $5,000 No Limit Hold'em event. His earnings for this year's annual poker series is more than $350, 000.

Although Friberg has only recently started participating in live poker tournaments, he already has a total winning of more than three million dollars and two money finishes.

However, this young professional poker player has not yet received a poker bracelet. These bracelets are coveted by almost all poker players who participate in WSOP events because they mean that you have garnered extraordinary winnings in the series. Aside from cash prices, these gold bracelets are exclusively given to poker champions.

In Friberg's case, achieving such a recognition and distinction is not too far off. He definitely has a very good shot not just in the WSOP but also in the World Poker Tour (WPT) events.
