Fundamentals of Video Poker

Article about the fundamentals of video poker.

Video poker is a popular past time in most casinos because there is the promise of a sure win, whether meager or sizable. This game is most enjoyed by those who are not quite willing to lose so much money, but are still interested in enjoying a gamble. Because of its similarity to a simple game of poker, it is very easy to learn and create winning strategies. The only significant difference in this poker game variation is that a player isn't competing against anyone. Instead it has been turned into, not only a game of skill, but of luck, as well. There are a few simple things that one must keep in mind when engaging in a game of video poker.

The first thing that one should recall is the likeness of its rules to that of a five card poker game. The usual combinations used in poker are found in this casino staple. When playing video poker, remember the possible five card combinations - the full house, the straight, the flush, the trios, the quadros, the deuces, and the rare top combos of straight and royal flushes. If one is instantly dealt with any of these card combinations, then it is an instant win.

Aside from simple poker knowledge, a strategy is also required. In video poker, a player is given the option to keep, discard, or draw cards. Because of this, one must be aware of his or her odds of winning in a game. In the most played video poker variety known as Jacks or better, the most reliable winning set one is dealt usually includes two Jacks. With this, a player automatically wins. But should a player like to gain more from this gamble, he or she can choose to up the ante. Naturally, a higher wager gives one a higher return, but this prize is also dependent on the outcome of the draw. A riskier wager with a better card combination assures a player of a larger amount of money.

But even if a player opts to shell out more cash, this would all go to waste if he or she does not make a strategic step. It's easy to judge one's cards when the best ones have been laid out. But should the hand show no promising cards, then it is the player's task to plan his next move. It is ideal to keep the cards of higher value when this situation arises.

At the end of the day, those who are most successful at video poker are those who approach the game with patience. Video poker assures any gambler of some cash winnings, but sometimes this can very difficult to be chanced upon, given the many possible combinations which can be formed with fifty-two, or sometimes, fifty-three cards. The best way to enjoy this game is not just to carelessly place your money and hope for the best; because this game may also be won, not just on pure luck, but on smart thinking as well.
