History of Blackjack

Learning about the history of blackjack.

Playing cards is as old as the concept of cards itself. The only thing clear about it is that it originated in Asia, but as to whether it's the Indians or the Chinese who first started playing cards remains a mystery. From Asia, card games were gradually introduced to the rest of the world -- first in the Middle East, then to Europe, and lastly, to America.

During the old times, only the aristocrats are entitled to a game of cards. It took some time before the working class was able to join in. At this point, mass production of cards for leisure and entertainment through woodblock printing occurred to replace the hand-painted ones of the members of the Royal family.

By 1700, casinos were constructed to create a specific venue for a unique brand of leisure and entertainment. It was then that blackjack entered the gambling scene. It was the French people who were believed to have developed this game of cards because the card game Chemin de Fer, which originated from France, is so much like it. Soon enough, blackjack was introduced to the United States. Early on, it was called the French Pack in North America but the name was later changed to blackjack.

Blackjack in Casinos

Gambling was recognized as a legal form of relaxation during the ancient times. The introduction of blackjack in casinos can be traced back to the time when the casino was first legalized. Although it did not make for a popular choice among casino goers back then -- they prefer the mind works used in poker -- it did not take a long time for this classic card game to be recognized.

From Twenty-One to Blackjack

In the early 1900's, blackjack was known as Twenty-One. The name was changed when casino owners decided to entice their members to try a hand at the game through a specific scheme. That scheme is about the bonus payout of 10 to 1, which will be pursed by the player who gets a hand of an ace and either a jack of spades or a jack of clubs.

Since then, blackjack became a favorite of those who frequent casinos. The first come-on is the payout, but once the players got to try the game, its concept became far more interesting than the prizes itself. Blackjack is nonetheless an enjoyable game to play, whether you are playing it alone in a regular game or against other players in a tournament game.

In blackjack, your ability to count cards and make intelligent decisions matter. Being aggressive is not enough to win you a game; you must also arm yourself with various strategies, which you can use during different parts of the game.

Today and Beyond

At present, the popularity of blackjack is at its peak. It is among the favorite games of players both in land-based casinos and in online gambling sites.

Playing blackjack online is more convenient than playing it in an actual casino. This is simply because you don't even need to dress up whenever you feel the urge to play the game -- you can play anytime you want right in the comfort of your own home. For this reason alone, you can expect online blackjack to count many more aficionados in years to come.
