Limbaugh’s Bid for Rams Encounters Disapproval

Disapproval reeks as Rush Limbaugh’s bid to buy the St. Louis Rams gets public attention. One of those in opposition is the owner of Indianapolis Colts, Jim Irsay who made his voice heard at the NFL Fall League Meeting, commenting that the radio host will not get his vote.

According to Jim Irsay, Limbaugh is not worthy to be the owner of St. Louis Rams because of the comments he made that were “inappropriate, incendiary, and insensitive.” Irsay also said that this is something the NFL doesn’t need. Add to that, Commissioner Roger Goodell commented that the NFL won’t stand for Limbaugh’ divisive remarks.

Limbaugh’s controversial comments

Limbaugh has long been attributed with comments that are somewhat out of line. Like in 2003 when he made a comment pertaining to Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb saying: “I think what we’ve had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well.” The comment was made before Limbaugh was forced to resign from the Sunday night football broadcast of ESPN.

More comments attributed to Limbaugh came up after he announced his intention to team up with the St. Louis Blues owner, Dave Checketts to buy the Rams. One comment that was said to be posted on his website in 2007 was this: “The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.”

Limbaugh’s response

In an e-mail, Limbaugh reveals that he was forced to respond because the quotes that were being attributed to him by media reports are “outrageous and slanderous”. He also revealed that he is happy that he is doing an effort in keeping the St. Louis Rams. He also said that he loves the National Football League, and that he promotes the well-being of NFL. He also greatly believes in the NFL players’ sportsmanship. In the potential team up, Limbaugh also commented that he will be a minority owner.

No specific bidders yet

Although the Rams have kept the league updated on their possible sale, no specific bidders were named. According to the New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, the Rams’ other owners, specifically the Rosenbloom family, are not even sure that they are “sellers.” Bob McNair, owner of the Houston Texans, comments that anyone can be a candidate to own a team as long as they meet the criteria, further adding that their vetting process is comprehensive.

Other personalities who oppose Limbaugh include Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. DeMaurice Smith, the NFL Players Association head, encourages players to speak up their thoughts about Limbaugh’s bid, with a few players already speaking out their reluctance to play for his team.
