Roloson’s 58 Saves Lead the Isles to Victory
New York Islanders beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 as Josh Bailey scored a goal at 4:18 in an overtime. However, the real star of the game is the 40-year-old Dwayne Roloson, the goalie for the Islanders. After facing 61 shots, saving 58 of those, Roloson led the Isles to take down the Leafs. According to STATS, Ron Tugnutt of the Quebec Nordiques was the last goalie to reach that total. Tugnutt stopped 70 shots for the Nordiques on March 21, 1991. It’s been 18 years since.
Roloson’s outstanding saves left Kessel speechless
Maple Leaf’s forward Phil Kessel, owning 12 shots of those hurled at the Islanders goalie, couldn’t find the words to say after witnessing Roloson’s amazing saves. On the other hand, Islanders coach Scott Gordon described Roloson as “outstanding”.
Roloson said it’s just another night, another game. He said he’s got to do the same things and try to give his team a chance to win. He signed in as an unrestricted free agent last summer and has made several great saves since then. His record improved to 7-2-5 this season. The Islanders went on to improve to 9-8-7, giving some credits to Roloson’s tireless efforts on the net.
Roloson took on the most painful shot with No. 52 from Mikhail Grabovski. The shot smacked him right in the mask, but it was no surprise to his team.
The Islanders lead the game 3-0
The Islanders started with a lead 3-0 over at 3:13. Among the scorers for New York were Jeff Tambellini, Matt Moulson, and Sean Bergenheim. Scorers for the Maple Leafs were Phil Kessel, Wayne Primeau, and Niklas Hagman with 4-11-7 respectively.
John Tavares, a rookie for the New York team, admitted to feeling a little bit anxious before the game that was witnessed by his family and friends. He was given one quality scoring chance, roaring in off the wing during the third period. The shot, however, was blocked by Jonas Gustavsson.
Moulson showed an act of triumph after scoring his “team-leading 11th of the season.” Bergenheim, on the other hand, roofed a shot over Toskala, who pulled himself out of the game after aggravating his groin injury. Toskala was beaten high by Tambellini, who also took a breakaway pass from Mark Streit.
As the boos came over Air Canada Centre, the Maple Leafs had a glimpse of hope from Phillip Kessel who scored his sixth goal in ten games against the Leafs. He took a pass from Matt Stajan at 15:32 into the game. As the prospect of a Maple Leafs comeback victory loomed, unfortunately, the NHL’s last-place team still found itself at the losing end.
Kessel, however, said that they will still continue to battle and prove that they are better than what their record shows.
