A pair of wild card contenders will collide at Comerica this weekend, as the Detroit Tigers look to squeeze past the shockingly competitive Baltimore Orioles to bump their wavering World Series futures. Although Detroit retains the possibility of taking the AL Central, it’s all or nothing for the O’s in the AL East.
When Baltimore leapt out in front of their division earlier this summer, it was never quite certain where they would fall on the MLB odds. Now as the postseason nears, that uncertainty makes them one of the most intriguing choices on the moneyline.
Though lengths behind the New York Yankees in the AL East, the Orioles are well within reach of one of the American League’s two wild card berths. Unfortunately they’re among five contenders – the Tigers included – who find themselves in similar positions.
As the regular season fades into the dog days of summer, all eyes will be on which of the potential playoff teams can hold on down the stretch. It’s been 14 years since Baltimore made the playoffs, and bettors are reasonably reluctant to make that commitment. Detroit, in contrast, made it as far as the American League Championship Series just last fall.
Nobody said it would be easy.
