Omaha Hi Lo

Omaha Hi Lo

Omaha high low and the general rules.

As a Community Card Game
This poker game, which is also known by the names of Omaha Hi/Lo split or Eight/better, is only one of the variations of the popular Omaha poker game. As a community card game, players place five of the community cards on the table, facing upwards. The players share these five community cards as they play. The other variations for Omaha are the Low Limit Omaha and the Pot Limit Omaha. This poker game is more popular and more widely played in the United States than in other parts of the world.

Split in the Game's Name
A simple explanation exists why the split is sometimes attached to the name of this poker game. The split being referred to  actually points to the fact that the game results to a division between the high hand victor and the low hand victor.
In addition, it is important to remember that in a split pot game like Omaha Hi Lo, there's a huge difference between getting half  of the pot's bets and winning the entire pot.

The Game's Objective
The general objective in playing this poker game is to simply achieve the best high and low hand, counting five cards each using only two hole cards and three more cards from the board set. The hole cards used may vary, but the player must always make sure that only two hole cards and three cards from the board set are used for both the low and high hand.

The Rules on Bets
There are two basic rules when betting in this game. These are the ante and the blinds. The ante is usually used only during tournaments and refers to the rule that a player has to put in a small value in the pot before the start of each hand. The blinds, on the other hand, requires two forced bets for every hand. These two forced bets are the small blind and the big blind.

The Eight or Better Term
Just as the split in this poker game's name requires an explanation, so does the eight or better term that is attached to this particular poker game's name. This particular term is actually solely distributed to the low hand. A player needs to acquire five nonidentical cards with a value of eight or lower to enable the player to pass for a low hand.

As Compared to the Omaha Hi
This particular poker works much similarly as the Omaha Hi poker game. This is why learning and mastering the basics of the Omaha Hi is essential in playing this variety. There is one critical distinction between the two, though. This distinction arises from the fact that in this poker game the player who holds the best hand wins the partial portion of the pot while the player with the low hand wins the remaining half. In the event that no player passes for a low hand, the one with the best hand automatically wins the whole pot.
