Pot Limit Omaha

Pot Limit Omaha

An introduction to pot limit omaha.

Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) is considered the most well-known variation of Omaha. Aside from its fame in the United States, this Omaha variety is frequently played at the tables of many online and land-based casino joints in Europe. Pot Limit Omaha is a poker game that requires a player to possess incomparable discipline and playing skills so he can plan his strategies well and win a certain tournament.

What is crucial when playing at the poker tables is to think critically when to use bluffing and semi-bluffing and to concentrate on betting in the pre-flop and flop, which are critical betting stages in Pot Limit Omaha. Playing by the rules in the pre-flop and flop stages is necessary because a PLO game becomes more challenging when the game reaches the turn, which is the fourth board card, and the river that is the final card in hold'em.

The Nut Hand in PLO is the Best Hand

Nut hand or also known as Lock is the best hand in poker that is considered the sure winner in a tourney. The best hand can only be made possible with the presence of a nut hand. Since there are no real breaking points in Pot Limit Omaha, only one player can possibly hold the nuts. However, in the event that two players possess strong hands, the first may have the nut hand or second-nut  while the other only has a near nut hand. To have a nut hand, a player must have hands that synchronizes well with each other so he can build either nut flushes or big full houses, and possibly, nut straights.

Guidelines in Building Hands:

1. Acquire high pocket pairs. High pocket pairs are possible to produce a big full house. Acquiring a set with only a small pair and no big pair may not proved to be helpful.

2. Connect cards that will create at least more than one straight potentials. Avoid low and mid-pocket pairs because they can damage your probability in building a nut hand.

3. Be careful in handling suited cards. This will only be good if an ace high flush can be achieved. However, achieving a flush other than a nut flush is not advantageous for a player. These suited cards that are non-nut flush can only be good for redraws, multiple draws, or back-door flush draws.

A good Omaha player knows what starting hands are rewarding to play. But before selecting hands, a player should consider several factors that will definitely affect his capability of building a nut hand. When it's the players turn to play and there are numerous players who are in the pot, he has an advantage of earning information that will enable him to use more hands.  If the pot has already been raised, he should carefully choose the hands that he must play, and pick the hands that will not be controlled by the player who raised the pot. Aside from considering what hands to play, a wise Pot Limit Omaha player must also know his position in the game before adding hands. Omaha is a drawing game, and to win, a player must think if he is in the early or late position before using his hands.
