André Akkari is a Brazilian-born professional poker player. He has pocketed close to $500,000 in winnings. Like a lot of young players, Akkari started out by playing poker online, playing at the free money tables of PokerStars. He worked as a Flash animator back then. This was for a software company that specializes in Flash websites for its corporate clients.
Akkari's exposure to poker would start with a simple project proposal in his day job. A new client had come in and they needed a proposal and some specifications for a new poker website. Akkari was assigned the task, so he decided to download the software to begin playing at PokerStars.
Akkari enjoyed his assignment so much that he even bought a poker book to improve his skills. He wanted to learn the game properly and methodically. As soon as he was ready, he went back online to join one of PokerStar’s real money games. Here, he began to earn some profits slowly but surely. In just a few years time, Akkari became one of online poker’s stars. So far, he has been to around 90 final tables. This had earned him a total of more than $500,000 through the grand tournaments at PokerStars. Recently, he won the 2008 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker’s $10,300 H.O.R.S.E event. He is now a member of Team PokerStars Pro and is seen online as “AAkkari.” He continues to earn big time money from online tournaments.
No one was surprised when Akkari eventually turned to live poker. As one of Brazil’s top players, he has toured live tournaments all over South America. He has even ventured out of his continent. In 2006, he went to Las Vegas to join the Bellagio Cup. In this poker tournament, he won two events and more cash winnings. He also took part in the PokerStars Carribean Adventure in June 2008. In this trip, he finished among the top 100 and took home $16,000 in winnings.
Among his commendable wins were from the Bellagio Cup tournament in 2006. There, Akkari won first place on two events - both for the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em. In the first game, he won $57,000. For the second game, he won $83,500. At the 2006 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, he placed 97th and took home $16,000 in winnings. At the European Poker Tour at Monte Carlo, he placed second at the €500 No Limit Hold’em table and won $75,004.
When not at the poker tables, Akkari stays at home to enjoy time with his wife and children. He also finds the time to play a little soccer with his friends. Likewise, he makes it a point to watch movies every week. He has recently gotten involved with ESPN Brazil. For the network, he shares expert commentary on various television poker games. This makes for a well-rounded family man, who also happens to be one of the world’s best poker players. Akkari is well regarded as the ambassador from the Latin American poker scene. His game play, skills, and sportsmanship have all contributed to his good fortune and popularity.
