Biography

When poker legend Benny Binion started the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 1970, he did not expect that it will become a big hit among poker players. Little did he know that it would be as popular as it is now.

In fact, poker's popularity has been unstoppable not only in America but also in other parts of the world. The game is played by millions of people for several reasons, including monetary benefits and recreational purposes. However, financial gain can be considered as the primary reason why many poker players are very much interested in participating and winning, especially if prizes, like those being offered at the WSOP, are involved. The WSOP tournaments not only give players fame but also big cash prizes.

However, there are also a lot of poker enthusiasts who join events and tournaments just for the love of the game. One of them is Hollywood star Chevy Chase.

Poker enthusiast

Chevy Chase is among the many Hollywood actors who love playing poker and are definitely in it for the fun and excitement. In fact, Chase is part of the prestigious Hollywood Gourmet Poker Club.

This Hollywood club was established by one of Chase's friends, the late Johnny Carson. Legendary talk show host Carson and Chase have some things in common -- they both knew how to make people laugh, they had both been hosts at the Oscar Awards, they both hosted a talk show and they both, clearly, love playing poker. The Hollywood Gourmet Poker Club which they both belonged to regularly met every month to play poker and more importantly, to unwind.

Chase has extensive experience in playing poker, although he is not a professional poker player like James Van Alstyne and Erik "Lilar" Friberg who compete in WSOP events or even in the World Poker Tour (WPT). For Chase, poker is mostly for fun and for socializing.

He regularly plays the game with his fellow actors and other Hollywood club members like Carl Reiner, Steve Martin, Dan Melnick, former head of MGM, and David Chasman, Hollywood producer. These guys play high stake games during the club's monthly gathering.

One of the tournaments in which Chase participated was the Tournament 4 of Celebrity Poker Showdown sponsored by the Bravo Network in October 2004. Bravo arranged a series of celebrity poker games and Chase was one of the players who competed in the fourth tournament of the game. Those who joined him in the fourth game were Kathy Griffin, Donny Deutsch, Neil Harris, and Shannon Elizabeth.

The celebrity participants in every game played the No Limit Texas Hold'em event and the price was given to their chosen charities.

Hollywood career

Chevy Chase is a Hollywood veteran who can be likened to the founder of the Hollywood poker club, the late Johnny Carson. Both men became famous for making people laugh.

Chase started his show business career in the 1970s as one of the writers and original cast members of the first season of NBC's Saturday Night Live (SNL)

Some of his lines -- like "good night and have a pleasant tomorrow" and "I'm Chevy Chase and you're not" -- have become very popular

He left SNL after a little over a year but he has guest hosted several times since. Aside from SNL, Chase starred in numerous Hollywood films and he also offered assistance in several humanitarian activities like the International Red Cross.

Chase has also been honored with his own star in the very famous Hollywood walk of fame in Los Angeles.
