Doyle Brunson was raised in a small town in Longworth, Texas. While growing up, he had the passion for playing different outdoor sports such as basketball. He decided to go to Hardin-Simmons University and studied education. Due to his exceptional skills in playing basketball, Minneapolis Lakers of the NBA picked him to play pro basketball. However, a knee twinge finished Brunson's dreams to pursue a basketball career.
An injury seemed to be a blessing in disguise for Brunson. After his accident, he began playing poker at the various colleges in Texas. His winnings helped him finance his education, and eventually, he left the university with a Master's Degree in Education. When Brunson left the university, he tried his luck in sales, but his paycheck was no good. Then, he remembered the poker winnings he had in college and decided to start playing pro poker.
The exciting world of gambling made Brunson a rounder in different card rooms. He was making a precarious living in gambling to support his family. The early part of Brunson's career as a poker player was quite rocky. He and his family has to move to Las Vegas to gain poker game invitations. While struggling to succeed in the chosen field, Brunson met Amarillo Slim" Preston, Sailor Roberts, and Johnny Moss, which soon became poker legends like him. When Brunson finally became a stable player in Vegas, he started winning in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and created an astounding record. He won the WSOP in 1976 and 1977 with the identical poker hand, which is a full house. The poker hand was tens full of deuces (10-2), and since Brunson became famous for that card combination, the hold'em hand "10-2" was tagged as "a Doyle Brunson".
Proving that he's a real poker champ, he emerged as the winner in the Legends of the Poker World Poker Tour (WPT) in 2004 where he went home with $1.1 million. In addition to this success, Brunson won his 10th WSOP bracelet in 2005. Moreover, a World Poker Tour event is named after him, which is the Doyle Brunson North American Championship. He also owns and manages DoylesRoom.com, an online gambling website. Brunson maybe a genius poker player, but unlike other professionals, he shares his playing secrets. He revealed his perceptions and game tactics in his books Super/System, Super/System 2, and Poker Wisdom of a Champion.
From a small town in Texas to the mammoth world of gambling, Brunson found his way to succeed in a field, which is far from his early passion. After ruling one poker game after another, he gained a total winnings of $4,654,912.
