Born in Akron, Ohio on March 25, 1978, Erica Schoenberg is a professional poker and blackjack player. She used to be a model, professional trainer, and volleyball player. She has competed in the World Series of Blackjack. Likewise, she has joined several World Series of poker tournaments. She is sponsored by Full Tilt Poker and is engaged to David Benyamine, another poker player. As of 2008, she has won more than $630,000 from tournaments.
One can say that gambling is in Schoenberg’s blood. Her parents met while betting at the Santa Anita racetrack. When she came along, the whole family was playing cards and betting on just about anything – from household chores to spare change.
Because television had not broken through a wider audience by then, there was nothing for Schoenberg but to tag-along with her dad at racetracks. It was during these gambling experiences at a young age where she developed her math skills. Schoenberg even won the 1991 Knox County Math Championship.
Even with her background in card playing and innate math skills, Schoenberg chose to go to college to study theater arts. Of course, she got to play card games on the side, continuing to hone her skills. After college, she took on different jobs. She was a model, kickboxing instructor, personal trainer, and even pro beach-volleyball player.
Card games still tempted her though, so she entered a blackjack tournament where she made $2,000 out of a cash outlay of $25. Here, she felt her competitive spirit satisfied. She eventually went to train under the MIT Blackjack Team. The team was famous for winning millions from the Las Vegas blackjack tables. Their tactics involved teamwork and card counting.
Schoenberg soon made a name for herself. By 2005, she was recognized as one of blackjack’s top 40 players. She was invited to play at the World Series of Blackjack for that year, and the Ultimate Blackjack Tour for 2006.
Schoenberg became known as Blackjack Babe. With her success in the game, she soon moved on to poker, where she was an instant hit as well.
In 2006, she was invited to the World Poker Tour Season 4, where she finished 16th. This started to earn her a new nickname, Poker Babe. She then also got invited to the WPT Ladies Night Out. At the WPT ladies’ game, she placed fourth – ranking higher than poker veterans Vanessa Rousso and Jennifer Tilly.
All these achievements got her noticed by Mansion Poker. Encouraged by her proven skills and good looks, they made an offer. Soon enough, she became one of the relatively new poker players to represent the site. As representative, she now sports the site’s gears during games. She is also their spokesperson.
As a full-time poker player, Schoenberg makes sure to have some spare time for herself. She disciplines her playing to just eight hours a day and five days a week. During her spare time, she enjoys her doing her hobbies, spending time with her fiancé, playing beach volleyball, and watching Ultimate Fighting Champion tournaments.
