How To Play Baccarat

Play and learn baccarat online.

Aside from poker and blackjack, baccarat provides people with an alternative card game to work with. However, before learning the rules of baccarat, one needs to understand its basic concepts.

The game of baccarat is played on a separate location within the casino. The playing table is roughly half the size of craps, involving three dealers and about 12 to 14 participants. There are two main bets to be made-- one for the banker (Banco) and the other for the player (Punto). A third one, the standoff, is rarely used in baccarat. Some casinos allow players to deal the cards while others have an in-house dealer. In online baccarat, the cards are automatically dealt by an electronic dealer.

To begin the game, the players make a bet on either Banco or Punto. Two cards are initially dealt, one for the player and the other for the banker. The aim in baccarat is to determine which hand has the superior value. A wager on a tie is likewise possible. The payout for each bet is equal. However, when Banco wins the bet, players who bet on Banco will pay an additional 5% commission. This is due to the fact that in an 8-deck card, the banker is likely to win three to four hands more compared to the Punto.

In addition, each hand contains two to three cards. The player-dealer places two cards facing down in the shoe and gives them to the player with the highest bet on Punto.  The other two cards are face down as well. The player inspects the card and returns them to the assigned dealer for that round. One of the dealers at the casino will then announce the outcome and the winner.

If either of the hand is equal to an 8 or 9, then it is called a "natural," and the dealing stops. Otherwise, based on the value of each hand, a third card may be dealt. The decision to deal a third card follows standard rules used in all casinos. When the dealing has been finished, the hand with the biggest value is declared the winner. Take note, however, that the card dealer is not in charge of distributing the payouts.

Furthermore, in baccarat, face cards (J,K,Q) as well as 10's have no value. The rest of the cards are worth their face value. Aces count as 1. Suits do not matter and single figure values are legal. In case the value reaches two digits, simply drop the second digit. For instance, if the total is 15, drop the 1 and the value becomes 5.

Each participant, including the designated dealer, has the option to make a wager on Punto or Banco. Players can choose not to deal. In this case, he passes the "shoe" to the succeeding player. The shoe stays with a player until such time that the banker loses. Otherwise, he passes the shoe to the next player.

Mastering the rules of baccarat is important for players who want to move on to the money games. To master the strategies and the rules of the game, it's best that players, especially the newbies, try playing free baccarat online.
