Unfortunately, he had to quit playing the sport because of an injury. After quitting, he pursued a bachelor's and masters degree. He also got a job in corporate finance. He also started playing "Magic: The Gathering", a card game in which players try to defeat their opponents using magical items, spells, and fantastic creatures depicted on their deck of printed cards or virtual cards. It was through playing this game that Horecki discovered PokerStars and started playing at online poker tables.

Marcin Horecki: beginnings in poker

At first, Horecki began playing only at low stakes cash games and tournaments, trying to build his bankroll. But then he worked his way up to play high stakes cash games. In 2006, he joined the Barcelona Open €1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event. During that tournament, he almost made it to the final table, catching the attention of other poker professionals and getting himself noticed for the first time on the live circuit. In 2007, Horecki participated in the European Poker Tour Season 3 Copenhagen event, during which he won a cash prize of $9,580 for finishing at 30th place. After that, he entered the Asian Poker Classic in Goa and made it to the final table, earning $29,000 in the process. Horecki also made his way to Vienna to participate in the Austrian Masters, choosing to play in the €500 No-Limit Hold’em Rebuy event in which he won $28,637.

In 2008, Horecki cashed in at a side event during the European Poker Tour Polish Open, which was held in Warsaw, Poland. But his winnings during that event paled in comparison to his third place win during the European Poker Tour Season 5 London No-Limit Hold'em event. Making it to the final table, Horecki earned $532,111 after the game, adding much to his career earnings as a professional poker player. As of 2008, his earnings from live tournaments already amount to more than $647,199.
