Credited to have created, co-owned, and managed the World Poker Championship, this Calcutta, India native born on August 10, 1947, is an unassuming yet powerful poker player to contend with in a tournament. Aside from his two gold bracelets from the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) tournament, Mel Judah is also known to be both a conservative player and a member of Vidal Sassoon's star stylists. Hardly a normal trait for a poker player to have, of course, but it works just well enough for him. The most profound rule in poker that Mel Judah learned came from his own father when he was 14 years old and struggling to learn how to play the Five-Card Draw. This was that he should know how to minimize losses and maximize his triumphs. Years later, 59-year old Mel Judah is living off his father's wise yet conventional words with over $2 million worth of poker winnings.
However, playing poker professionally might not have been in Mel Judah's mind earlier in his life. After immigrating to Australia, Mel Judah mastered a different trade entirely -- hairdressing. Whereas most of his contemporaries in poker were sharpening their skills at local card game houses, he was out in England working as the newest member of Vidal Sassoon's styling team. Some of the brightest stars in Hollywood became his clients, and he was soon compelled to start a salon of his own in London. Stylists are known for their great social skills, and looking back, Mel Judah would credit these skills as a big help to developing a psyche that helped him win poker matches.
By the 1970s, Mel Judah soon got the poker bug, and this prompted him to play seriously again. He started to commute to different tournaments throughout Las Vegas regularly, and it paid off when he won his first ever World Series Of Poker bracelet in the 1989 Seven-Card Stud tournament. This win was followed by another gold bracelet back in 1997, and another in 2003. The one in 2003 was a close one, since Mel Judah almost lost during that game. His continued successes in World Series Of Poker tournaments has allowed Judah to win bigger amounts from all over the world. In 2003, he succeeded in winning the highest pot amount to date in the World Poker Tour Legends tourney - a whopping $579,375. Aside from his notable wins, Mel Judah also had respectable and admirable finishes in the World Series Of Poker tournaments since he started out. One of which is finishing in the third slot in the Main Event back in 1997. However, he wasn't seen in the top-money brackets recently.
Lately, poker game fans claim that Judah joins fewer tourneys, yet he still makes time to show up for the WSOP. Mel Judah currently owns a home in London, England and he has created, co-owned and is currently the tournament director for the World Poker Championship in Ireland. He is married, and he has a daughter named Tana and a son named Mark.
