Everyone loves a good rags-to-riches story about famous and popular celebrities or otherwise. Learning about how these people struggled against seemingly insurmountable odds makes them more interesting and worthy of admiration -- or a fan club. Poker player Men "The Master" Nguyen is one of them.

Born on 1954 in Phan Thiet, Vietnam, Men Nguyen's life is no less different than the people in his native homeland at that time. Due to poverty, he was forced to drop out of his school in 1967 when he was only 13 years old. In order to assist his family financially, Men Nguyen decided to become a bus driver. Like the other anti-Communist believers in Vietnam, he decided to escape the Regime in 1978. Together with 87 other people, Men Nguyen boarded a boat in secret and sailed to Malaysia. It was a stroke of luck that he was given by the United States of America, political asylum, in 1978. Several years later, in 1986, Men Nguyen became a legal citizen of the United States of America.

Before that, however, Men Nguyen had his first taste of poker when he went to a junket in Las Vegas back in 1984. As with all beginners, he had a hard time understanding and keeping up with the game, causing him to lose a large amount of money. He continued to play during weekends, and this stubborn insistence made him earn the nickname "Money Machine." Fortunately, Men Nguyen was able to master the said game, and he was able to win for the very first time back in 1987. With the large amount of money that he won, Men Nguyen started to open his first business, a furniture store and a dry cleaning business. Eventually, they were sold in 1990, since Men Nguyen had no time in hands to handle them, since he was more focused on his professional poker playing career.

Throughout his 17-year poker career, Men Nguyen has won over 75 tournaments and 120 money finishes from 2000-2004. A brilliant mentor, Men Nguyen has always believed in assisting new poker players and helping them to become successful in one way or the other. He has tutored so many people that he is now believed to be the only player who have trained the most number of poker tourney winners -- not bad for a guy who had to lose several hundreds of dollars before winning. One of Men Nguyen's students christened him "The Master," which is an apt title that makes one envision zen monks, samurai warriors, and Jedi master Yoda. The name apparently stuck, and he is now referred to as "Men The Master."

In true heroic fashion, this poker master donates his poker earnings from tournaments and regular tutoring to several charities in his native homeland. His continued support has led him to donate an amount that built a kindergarten in 1996. Men Nguyen was awarded the Player of the Year by Card Player Magazine on the years 1997, 2001, 2003, and 2005. His status in playing has elevated and is now revered as one of poker's most dangerous and skillful tournament and cash game players in the world. Men Nguyen is married and has eight young children, and is credited to have been the mentors of fellow Vietnamese poker players Minh Nguyen and David "The Dragon" Pham.
