A bad boy figure never fails to emerge in any field of sporting industry. In the poker circuit, only a few are branded as bad boys and Mike "The Mouth" Matusow is one of them. "The Mouth" nickname compliments his lively habit of constantly talking at the poker table. While there are some players who consider him as one of the most annoying players in the field, Mike can never be discounted with his innate talent and skill with cards.
Born on April 30, 1968 in Los Angeles, California, Mike's bad boy figure is generally attributed to his once uncontrolled private life characterized by fair moments of ups and downs. As a kid, Mike suffered extreme bullying from school, thus resulting to his loss of interest in attending college. He tried to get a job as a mechanic, but was turned down because of his lack of education. After his auto mechanic job attempt, Mike then worked at his family's furniture business.
Mike was already a video poker fan when he had his first encounter with real poker by working as a card dealer at Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall in Las Vegas. During his time of dealing cards for other players, Mike eventually learned a lot of game techniques from some of the most expert poker players in the industry. After some time, Mike tried his luck in small poker tournaments. With his achievements in online and live poker games (Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars.com, and UltimateBet), Mike finally decided to try his card talents in the professional poker level. As proof of his excellent performance in playing as a pro, Mike's big wins include the 2005 World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions, the 2002 WSOP $5,000 buy-in Omaha Hi-Lo Split Event, and the 1999 WSOP $3,500 Buy-in No-Limit Hold'em event. His name also soared with his winning prize of $250,000 at the World Poker Tour (WPT) UltimateBet Aruba Classic in 2004.
Since Mike is regarded as one of the bad boy figures in the poker circuit for his loud-mouthed blowups and frolics, there are some who seriously hate him while there are those who find him hilarious. Most pro players avoid Mike because of his dark history with drugs and mental health issues. Mike got involved with ecstasy, speed, and cocaine drugs starting 2000. His addiction eventually led to his long break in the poker business. Also, Mike admitted in an interview in 2005 that he has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity.
With a strong determination to get his life straightened out, Mike has been appearing clean and healthy in various poker tournaments for almost three years now. Despite Mike's success in various poker tournaments, he still finds time to improve his extensive game and learn something from his errors at the table. Thanks to his innate card skills and keen observation during poker games, Mike Matusow is now regarded as one of the finest Texas Hold'em and Omaha players in the field as well as being among the most successful bad boy figures in the international poker circuit.
