Biography

The path to being a successful professional poker player proved to be difficult as in the case of Minh Ly. Choosing a long, complicated route to become a top player in the poker circuit, his efforts have eventually paid off as he is one of the most famous figures in the poker industry today. In fact, he is now acclaimed as among the best cash game players in the entire poker arena, with total tournament prize earnings of more than $2 million, as of 2006.

Born in Vietnam, Minh migrated to Las Vegas in 1986, working as a poker dealer and a cook in a Chinese restaurant during his first few years in the States. However, his salary from his two jobs proved to be insufficient in making ends meet. With such dilemma, Minh decided to boost his earnings by playing poker in a series of low-limit tables. After five years of playing low-limit poker games, Minh's game skills and knowledge eventually improved.

Minh found his way playing at Doyle Brunson's table with a $4,000 to $8,000 game stake. Because of the high stakes, he eventually decided to try his luck playing at professional poker tournaments. Luck seemed to be in favor with Minh for his plays at various poker tournaments proved to be very successful. His first big win was at the World Series of Poker in 2001, finishing third in the $3,000 Limit Texas Hold'em and in the $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em events. In addition to Minh's poker career highlights, he got himself included to the final table of the 2002 WSOP Main Event as well as in the 2005 WSOP $5,000 Short-Handed No-Limit Hold'em event.

Meanwhile, Minh's poker peers regard him as one of the poker industry's true gentlemen for he is always respectful, calm, and quiet at the table. However, Minh had his fair share of game rattles just like other frustrated players in a poker game. He got into a memorable argument with Mike Matusow during the 2005 WSOP Main Event after getting an early elimination from the table. Minh eventually redeemed his name from his disappointing game at the WSOP Main Event when he won the 2005 World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship in 2005. His first win for the title was also fitting because Doyle, the tournament host, was also his poker adviser. With this big breakthrough in Minh's career, he is now acclaimed as one of the most successful and revered poker players in the industry.

For almost 15 years of a successful poker career, as well as a supportive and loving personal life with his family, Minh showed his peers that the hardships and struggles he experienced were all worth it. He has always worked hard to become a winner, no matter what place he lands in a tournament. With his perseverance and honesty in playing poker, Minh Ly truly deserves to be recognized as one of the best players in the international poker industry.
