Poker Deception

How to lure your opponent to where you want him.

Aside from Math skills and having a good strategy, an online poker player also needs to have good bluffing skills. This deceptive skill can be useful if a player's hand is not strong nor weak, but still has a chance of winning against the opponent's cards. Psychological tactics such as bluffing can also confuse an opponent, especially if he thinks that he can predict a player's next move or somehow read a player's cards based on that gambler's previous plays.

The bluffing technique is only useful during high-stake games since a bet or a pot amounting to less than four bucks doesn't really pose a financial risk to most of the players. In a high-stake game, however, the chances of losing large amounts of cash becomes greater so deceptive poker skills are definitely helpful.

Bluffing skills can range from pretending to have a higher hand by calling or raising bets to simply maintaining a poker face even though the hands of a player is not that good. This technique can show a different image to the opponents, triggering them to think twice about their next steps.

Semi-bluffing may also be categorized as a kind of deceptive poker skill. Unlike bluffing, this technique can be utilized during a low-stake game. An example would be is if a player has neither weak nor strong hands but has a big chance of getting a stronger hand once he is given a new card. Once a gambler is in a situation such as this, it could be a good time to make or raise a bet to scare-off the opponents.

If a player is confident that his hands are the strongest, he can actually slowplay, another deceptive technique used in poker games. In this method, a player pretends to have a low-card combination, inviting his opponents to either raise or make bets. Once the pot is packed with higher bets or raises, the player with the strongest cards wins when the hands are shown. The only drawback is when an opponent can show a better card combination, although this is rare since slowplaying is only done when a gambler is absolutely sure that no one will top his current cards.

Whatever deceptive skill is used when playing poker, always make sure that the concept behind any technique or method is well-understood. A gambler should also know his limitations when using his bluffing or slowplaying techniques as not all methods can be used in all kinds of online poker games.

Since an opponent's face can't be seen in some online poker rooms, bluffing could be seen in the way a player makes his bets. So before raising the bets during an online poker game, it's best to know first if any of the opponents are just bluffing their way to the top. To practice doing these deceptive poker skills, an online poker room can become an amateur player's best friend since many of these gaming rooms provide tips and hints in playing this card game.
