Biography

Currently living in Houston, Texas, Sam Farha was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1959 as Ihsan Farha. He left his country for the U.S. during his teen years when the civil war started. He then settled to Kansas and studied at Friends University in Wichita where he obtained his Business Administration degree.

After graduating, he moved to Houston to work with his brother. He then spent five years working in Texas. However, it was only a year after he relocated that he played his first poker game. It was during his first few games that he had won thousands of dollars. As a result, he decided to become a round-the-clock professional poker player after quiting his job in 1990.

The year 2003 marked Farha's biggest win as well as his game-to-fame. On the final table of the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP), he played against Chris Moneymaker. After the final game, Moneymaker bagged the championship leaving Farha as the second place but with $1.3 million and WSOP gold bracelet. Months later, the two had a rematch that was arranged by the PokerStars. This time, Farha went home redeemed and triumphant.

Meanwhile, one thing that poker fans and live poker game spectators will notice on Farha is that, most of the time, he has an unlit cigarette- since smoking is prohibited inside poker rooms- always keep between his lips. He would only change his cigar if he drops down cards, which he thinks are strong but are really not.

Furthermore, Farha is an Omaha expert. Though he is known as a short-handed player, still many feared him, especially when he is playing the pot-limit Omaha. It is his best game as some poker analysts would say. Ironic as it is that he became famous for the Hold'em one-on-one with Moneymaker, hold'em is not his strong point. Experts believe that Farha made it through that event and even made it to the final table because of his covetous courage.

At present, Sam Farha's life does not only revolve around poker playing. On the contrary, poker is not the only form of gambling Farha is very good at. He is also a certified pinball player once winning a tournament back in Kansas. Moreover, he pocketed a big sum when he won a Pac-Man competition. He is also busy working on a book entitled "Lucky is not Enough," and appears on "High Stakes Poker" series on GSN. Also, he is on the process of creating a TV reality show and a video game about poker. In addition to that, he is the current spokesperson of Harrah's Casino.

To add, Farha is into sharing his poker knowledge with other poker players. It is known that he is the mentor of Goerge Abdallah who won 2nd place in pot-limit Omaha during the 2006 WSOP. Farha is indeed a player to be feared at the same time a presence to be respected.
