Spiderman not only uses his hands to spin webs, but also to hold great cards in poker. Hollywood hunk Tobey Maguire, famous for playing Peter Parker in the blockbuster movie adaptation of the comic-book hero Spiderman, is now among well-known celebrity poker players. He had been spotted in many major poker games in town over the past couple of years, and had actually won a considerable amount of money in most of them.

Now, Tobey is not only counting the money he earned from the box office, especially from the "Spiderman" franchise, but also the big bucks he raked in from the prestigious poker tournaments. In October of 2004, Tobey took home the whopping $95,480 first prize after winning the "Phil Hellmuth Invitational No Limit Hold'em National Championship of Poker." The tournament, which served as the eighth among the twelve playing events of the National Championship of Poker held at Hollywood Park Casino, has been inviting participants from all over the country and boasting an average prize pool cash amounting to a million dollars.

It could be said that Tobey's triumph was well-deserved as he lasted for 13 hours and defeated 123 players, the likes of "That 70s Show" star, Danny Masterson, and other equally skillful players like Marcel Sabag, Reza Payvar, Alex Papachatzakis, Stan Goldstein, and Lance Allred. In the said event, it was the first time for Tobey to ever win -- a victory that very much impressed poker legend Phil Hellmuth, whom Tobey already had the chance to play with. Tobey, according to Hellmuth, showed much determination and focus toward his game, and hence, could be the next poker stars of the future.

Aside from the "Phil Hellmuth's Poker Invitational," Tobey had also played and won in numerous major poker tournaments. He bagged the fourth place and won $17,967 in the "No-Limit Hold'em" game of the "Festa al Lago III Poker Tournament" last 2004, fifth place in the "No-Limit Hold'em" game of the "Holiday Bonus Tournament" for $4,557 last 2005, and eighth place in the "No-Limit Hold'em" game of the "Bellagio Challenge Cup" for $22,885, also last 2005.

Tobey, out of his passion for poker, also established a poker event named after himself. His "Tobey's Game" is now among the most sought-after games in this poker-frenzy Hollywood scene. With his fabulous home in Hollywood Hills as venue, "Tobey's Game" requires a minimum buy-in of $2,000, and has been often referred to as "becoming more and more expensive."

Because of his active participation in the realm of poker, it may be safe to say that the actor now has an alternative career, should he decide to take a break from doing movies. A certified Hollywood A-lister, Tobey has already established a name in Hollywood prior to playing Spiderman. He appeared in several critically-acclaimed movies like "The Ice Storm" directed by Ang Lee, "Wonder Boys" opposite Michael Douglas, and "The Cider House Rules," which was honored at the Oscars.
