Biography

Tuan Lam has come to embody the rags-to-riches story – and here, he owed his success to poker.

Lam was born on New Year’s Day in the middle of the Vietnam war, back in 1966. He fortunately survived the conflict and moved to Toronto, Canada as soon as he was old enough to work. Life was too hard in war-torn Vietnam, and he needed to leave in order to get better opportunities. His main goal was to earn enough to be able to send money back home.

While in Canada, Lam ended up doing a string of jobs. In one of the jobs – this one, at a metal company – he learned poker from his co-workers. He enjoyed the game but didn’t really play outside work.

He eventually moved on to work for a casino as a dealer. This was one of the jobs he truly enjoyed. As dealer, it was part of his job to fill in at tables that weren’t full. To do this, he had to be actually good at poker. Mere hobby playing skills were not enough. So, Lam turned to books. He practiced and practiced until he got so good in the game. Lam was beyond good, really – he was great. Pretty soon, he turned pro and was playing for himself and not the casino. He also began to earn regularly from cash games in Canada and the US.

Even though Lam was primarily a cash game player, he went to Las Vegas in 2007 to try out the tournament games at the World Series of Poker Main Event. He was just one among a sea of 6,358 professional poker players. Luckily, after twelve grueling days, he made it to the final table. By then, he was assured of a cash prize of at least $500,000. Lam’s game at the time was tight. He played solidly, taking things slowly but surely. He watched as one player after the other busted out. By the end of the game, he finished second with an impressive game and $4,840,981 cash prize. This single win alone made Lam life a true rags to riches story.

Lam continues to play the tournament circuit. He has also, of course, gotten back to the cash games that he loves so much. Indeed, it is heartening to hear of his success at something that he is passionate about and good at. Likewise, to know his background and the hardships that he went through, one can truly say that he deserves the success that he is experiencing now.

Lam is married with two children. When not playing professional poker, he spends most of his time with his family. He has even been able to afford to give back some of his winnings to his country. His new found comfort has also enabled him to fly back and forth to Vietnam. He is able to visit his family there, as well as make sure that they are comfortable and well provided for.

Lam’s life and professional poker career are testament to the good that can come from pursuing something that one is passionate about.
